1. Clothes Take Multiple Cycles to Dry
If a normal load needs two or three runs, airflow through the vent is restricted. This is usually the first sign homeowners notice, and it is also the most reliable indicator of a clogged line.
2. The Dryer Is Hot to the Touch
A dryer that feels unusually hot on top or on the back is not circulating air properly. Excess heat builds up when the vent cannot exhaust warm, moist air fast enough.
3. Burning Smell While Drying
A burning or musty smell during a cycle is a serious warning. Lint trapped against a hot heating element can smolder and ignite. If you smell burning, stop the dryer and do not run it until the vent is inspected.
4. Lint Around the Outside Vent Cap
Lint collecting around the exterior vent hood, on the ground below it, or in the grass nearby means the vent is pushing lint out faster than normal — a classic sign of buildup breaking loose or a failing seal.
5. The Vent Flap Barely Opens
When the dryer runs, the outside vent flap should open easily. If it barely lifts or stays closed, the duct is blocked and exhaust has nowhere to go.
6. Clothes Feel Hotter and Stiffer Than Usual
Restricted airflow traps heat and humidity inside the drum, which can over-dry and stiffen fabric while leaving the load feeling damp and hot.
7. The Dryer Keeps Shutting Off Mid-Cycle
Many dryers have a thermal overload sensor that trips when the machine gets too hot. Frequent mid-cycle shutdowns are a safety response — and a strong signal the vent needs professional attention.
