Do: Use Rigid Metal Duct for the Longest Run
Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is the only material approved for dryer exhaust in most building codes. It is smooth inside, so lint travels through it instead of collecting, and it resists crushing and heat.
Don’t: Rely on Long Runs of Flexible Foil Duct
Flexible foil ducts trap lint in their ridges and sag into dips where moisture and lint collect. Many codes limit them to short connector pieces at the dryer only, and the total vent run should be kept as short as possible with few elbows.
Do: Terminate the Vent Outdoors
The vent must exit to the outside through a hood with a back-draft flap and a rodent guard. Terminating into a wall cavity, attic or crawlspace pushes moisture and lint into your home — a fire and mold hazard.
Don’t: Use Screws or Staples That Poke Into the Duct
Screws and staples that penetrate the inside of the duct catch lint and create buildup points. Where fasteners are needed, use the proper technique and seal joints with foil tape — never standard duct tape, which degrades with heat.
Do: Maintain Proper Clearances and Protect the Vent
Keep the vent line away from heat sources, avoid sharp bends, and make sure the duct is supported and protected where it passes through walls or floors. A professional installer knows the clearances required by code for your home.
Don’t: Skip the Inspection After Installation
A new installation should be visually inspected end to end and flow-tested before you call it done. If you cannot see and verify the full run, hire a licensed technician who can.
