Gather the Right Tools
You will need a dryer vent cleaning brush kit, a vacuum with a hose attachment, a screwdriver to loosen clamp connections, and work gloves. A cordless drill can power the rotary brush for longer runs.
Disconnect and Access the Full Run
Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Disconnect the vent duct from both the dryer and the wall connection. This gives you access to both ends of the run.
Brush from Both Ends
Feed the rotary brush through the vent line from the inside out and from the outside cap inward. Rotate the brush slowly and let the bristles scrape the lint loose. Vacuum up the dislodged debris at both openings.
Clean Behind and Under the Dryer
While the dryer is pulled out, vacuum behind and underneath it. Dust and lint accumulate on the floor and against the wall where you normally cannot reach.
Reconnect and Test Airflow
Reattach the duct with tight clamp connections, push the dryer back (without crushing the duct), and run a short no-heat cycle. Go outside and confirm the vent flap opens and you feel air pushing out.
When to Call a Professional
DIY cleaning works for short, straight runs. If your vent is long, has multiple elbows, exits through the roof, or you still smell burning after cleaning, call a professional with commercial-grade equipment.
