Clean the Lint Screen Before Every Load
The single most effective habit is wiping the lint screen clean before each load. A blocked screen slows airflow and lets heat build up inside the dryer. This one habit takes seconds and removes most of the lint your dryer produces.
Clean the Full Vent Line at Least Once a Year
The lint screen catches only the lint closest to the drum. Fine particles still travel down the vent line and settle there. A professional annual cleaning clears the entire run from dryer to the outside cap.
Keep the Area Around the Dryer Clear
Cardboard boxes, clothing, cleaning rags and dust on top of or beside the dryer can ignite. Keep the space around and behind the dryer clean and dry, and never store flammable liquids near it.

Make sure the exterior vent hood is not blocked by bird nests, leaves or snow, and that the flap opens freely. Restricted exhaust is a leading cause of dryer overheating.
Never Run the Dryer While Sleeping or Away
Dryer fires often start during unattended cycles. Run the dryer only when someone is home and awake, and turn it off when you leave the house or go to bed.
Watch for the Warning Signs
Long dry times, a hot dryer, burning smells and lint around the vent cap all point to restricted airflow. Address them right away with a cleaning before they become a fire risk.
